Z170A PC Mate Won't Boot
« on: 23-August-15, 07:09:55 »

Hi, I have the Z179A PC Mate MOBO and I cannot get it to boot. The Easy DeBug lights flash as follows. The VGA light stays off. The RAM light stays on except for a brief moment when it turns off and the CPU LED comes on for about a half second. Then the RAM light comes back on and the cycle repeats. I removed the boare from the case and put it on a non-conducting surface and hooked it up. The above scenario repeats itself. The monitor never acknowledges any signal from the board or video card. Also, the manual is not very clear. Is the Easy Debug LED on when there is a fault? Any help is appreciated. Al K.

Hi

My first thing that came into my mind is your PSU. It was released around 2005, and in my opinion it has no right to work well with any system that is Haswell or newer.

Hi, This is a brand new build. With or without the Video card it acts the same. Memory in any slot, 1 or 2 sticks it acts the same. Very frustrated.
Re. power supply, Is it the age, or the wattage? I checked all pinouts and they have proper voltage when not in MOBO. Thanks, Al K.

Testing a new psu certainly would be a good idea. As it is very old and has even new not been a great one replacement should be the way. Nobody knows what (or if something) has gone wrong inside it.

Also remove any USB devices and drives (also the main HDD) and see if bios comes up then.

HI,
OK connected new EVGA Haswell ready 600W PSU. Same problem. Flashing lights and no bios boot.

BUT WAIT ! ! 1

I left everything running and all of a sudden the bios message appeared. To back up a little, I tried more of the memory placements and had no luck. I left it with two sticks in the 3 and 4 slot. This is where after several minutes it booted. I am now going through the bios and checking all. When it boots now, it comes right up. Don't know if it was the power supply or not, I don't care.
Thanks to Nichrome and flobelix for pushing the PSU. Glad Best Buy is close.

I will see what gives here and then try the memory in the 2 and 4 slots.

Hi,
Shut down and go do stuff. Come back and put memory in 2 and 4. No response, just blinking RAM and CPU LED.
Put RAM in 3 and 4 and turn on. NOTHING, not even the blinking RAM and CPU LED.
But another LED is lit. It is behind the power plug JPWR1. See photo. Anyone know what this means?
Thought I was good, But the world has other thoughts. Thanks,

Over Voltage protection LED. Now what. Is there a reset? I tried a second PSU and the red LED comes on immediately. No boot no nothing. Seems to be the MOBO.
Does anybody have any suggestions? Thanks, Al K.

When did you install windows? (or change to not installed yet)

Try a single memory stick in all of the slots.
Have you inspected the CPU socket for bent pins before you mounted the CPU? If not maybe it is time.
Do you remember the BIOS version?

OK,
Yes, I tried clearing cmos, no affect.
Yes the CPU is installed properly as I did have two starts that got into bios. I also along the way did remove and reseat some time before the bios appeared.
No, I do not remember the bios version.
I will go back to swapping the memory around. Did that once, and lucked out with it posting with sticks in 3 and 4.

One memory module only until it resolved.
Have you checked the CPU socket for bent pins when you re-seated the CPU?

OK, so the manual is not always right.
The only way I could clear the over voltage led and get the board to react was to pop the battery out and then short the cmos jumpers. Put the battery back and the over voltage LED was out and the board would react.

Putting the single stick in any of the slots just gave me the usual RAM fault LED with a flash to the CPU fault LED.
Putting two sticks into 3 and 4 and it would boot to bios repeatedly. I get a "push esc to skip something or any other key" but it always ends up at Shell in yellow letters. I don't have a hard drive hooked up so that may be part of it.
I did the above on lunch hour so I am back at work. Will try to put 8.1 in the next couple of days.

I jump the power switch posts to turn on the board, but when I jump again to shut off it immediately shuts off for 5 seconds and restarts. Yes I am jumping the right switch. I tried the reset posts but that just resets as it should. Sunday morning I had to jump for 5 seconds to get it to shut off. This is what I thought is default. If I jump for 5 seconds it restarts like I described for a short jump. Both ways it restarts. Now I have to jump and kill the power supply before 5 seconds  to get it to stay off. What next???

Any thoughts as to why the memory needs to be in non standard slots? Is this a show stopper for more memory or reliability? Any ideas as to why the board restarts when power is jumped momentarily? I could not find the bios entry for how the power switch reacts. Off instantly or after 4 seconds.

Keeping my fingers crossed. Al K.

OK, it is going to be risky but there is not much to lose anyway.

There is a BIOS update 10.3 (A3)
http://www.msi.com/support/mb/Z170A-PC-MATE.html#down-bios

Extract the BIOS file to a FAT32 formatted USB key, boot and enter BIOS (Del/"." key on numpad) and flash with M-Flash.
Lets hope for improvements.

There seems to be a lot problems with the 170 motherboards, since I see a couple post with the same questions.

I have the same trouble as you with the RAM/CPU flikker, which I will try to solve tomorrow. I've only tried to use DIMM 2 and 4, maybe I should try the others too. Even tho it can't be true that the :censored:  doesn't work in the slots that are preffered for it.. It's getting on my nerf atm.
- Or maybe we are just the dumb ones.

I will reply to your post if I find a solutions before you do! :)

Hi, So I flashed the bios to A30. At first, after the appropriate re-boot, the board went into the Ram LED on and CPU LED flicker. I shut down and started to put one stick of memory into each slot and try a reboot. All 4 slots gave me the same Ram, Cpu flashing. So thinking that maybe the bios flash actually did something, I put the sticks into the 2 & 4 slots. Same flashing. Then I remembered that it took forever for the board to work when I put the RAM in the 3 & 4 slots, so I waited 10 minutes. Nothing.

Ready to quit, I pt the RAM back into the 3 & 4 and waited about 5 minutes. The board finally reacted and is working. It booted, and shows that the bios is now A30. I hook up the HDD and DVD-ROM and prepare to get Windows working. Windows comes up on its own (clone disk of other computer). I install drivers from MSI DVD and all seems to be working. Christmas in August.

There still is a lot that MSI needs to resolve. What's up with the memory slots? Why does it take 5 minutes after a bios change to come up? What is with the flashing Easy De-Bug LEDs. Where's the description of what the new bios addresses? I have very little confidence in this board. It has been a real struggle, and it isn't in a chassis yet. That could prove to be another headache. Dinner is cold and I have had enough of this for today.  Al K.

I would still start RMA process, this is in no way a MB in working condition.
The memory is in single channel mode, and one memory must work, always.

OK, I am an elephant. I stripped the board to return it last night. Guess what I found? There were a couple of pins that were bent. Imagine that. I guess I have heavier fingers than I realized.

Apologies to those who suggested the CPU might not be installed correctly. Since it sometimes booted, I assumed (I know) all was good with the processor.

Since my problems appear to be self inflicted, is there hope for the board, or is it a brick? If returned to the factory, can they straighten pins or replace the socket? How do I start an RMA? Thanks, Al K.

Hi

There is a chance that shop or MSI will accept it for RMA and send you new board. Or at least they will take it for service to fix the pins. Contact shop at first, and if they refuse for both: RMA(exchange) and service, then speak with MSI tech: >>How to contact MSI.<<

Since my problems appear to be self inflicted
You may never know, always inspect the hardware, especially the socket pins for damage on arrival.
Take extra caution when installing the CPU, best always to do it outside the case (the whole build even,  tests and installation) it is safer.

Re: Z170A PC Mate Won't Boot
« Reply #21 on: 12-September-15, 09:13:19 »

Hi, First of all, Hats off to MSI. I called their RMA and support department and explained my problem. They replied that there might be a $charge for the repair of the board. I said that was fine and got an RMA. Sent the board in and received a replacement. No Charge ! ! ! How fantastic is that?

So now on to the continuing saga of memory problems. The second board has a different serial number so I know it is not the original I had. If I put the memory in slots 1 or 2 or both, the board will boot up into windows. It will acknowledge the correct amount of memory and load windows. If I put a stick in slot 3 or 4 the board will not post. If a stick is in 2 only it will load completely. If I put a stick in the 4 slot with the stick in the 2 slot it will not post. Any stick in either the 3 or 4 and no post. Bios is A3, Cleared cmos no post with sticks  in 2 and 4. Just the debug LEDs flashing between RAM and CPU.

Ran the Intel processor diagnostic tool, and all came back as passed. There were a few tests that were unsupported, Front side bus test, QPI test, PCH test and PCH ERUM test. But the overall result is Pass. I am thinking the CPU is good. So where do I go from here. As much as I hate to say it, it looks like it is back to the factory. Anybody have a different idea?  Thanks, Al K.

Don't know why some of the text is grayed out. The tests that were not supported were the Front side bus, QPI, PCH and PCHErum. I also tweeked my signature to change memory locations from last board. Al K.

try reflash to this BIOS version: * E7971IMS.A44.rar (5994.85 kB - downloaded 149 times.)
then retest and see how its goes

Hi, I reflashed to .A44 and now it will not post in any memory configuration. One note, after flash, only the CPU easy debug LED was lit. I cleared cmos and now the usual DRAM and flash to CPU is occurring. With out a post, is there any way to go back to the .A30 bios, or do I now have a brick? Al K.

OK, cleared cmos again with power cord out, battery out, waited several minutes. No change. With any combo of memory in any slot there is no post. Just the LEDs flashing between DRAM and CPU. Is there anything else to try? Al K.

do you have another different memory to try?
i suspect there could be some major compatibility issue with your current memory sticks

Quote Over Voltage protection LED.

this doesn't look good.. checking the photo:
https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=260118.0;attach=26263;image

there could be some ESD issue or shorting issue..
can you place the board over the wooden table? [not over this textile which can cause ESD or perhaps to conduct electric]

There were a couple of pins that were bent.

double check the CPU socket again, very carefully with magni glass..
i suspect repeatable error while installing the CPU or the CPU cooler..

checking your photo again:
https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=260118.0;attach=26263;image

i see the CPU cooler is installed up side down, rotated on 180 degrees
this probably has something to do with all issues..
like bented pins again due improper CPU or CPU cooler installation

Hi,
As stated earlier, the board and cpu passed the Intel Processor Diagnostic tool. The board would boot and run windows. The problem was not being able to have memory in the 3 or 4 slot. After flashing to A44 and clearing cmos twice, the board will not post. This is not the same board as the photos in earlier posts. There are no bent pins on this board. The board is on bare wood. The memory registered properly in the former bios. The CPU passes functionality and stress tests under A30 bios. The board will not post under A44 bios. Is there any way to get back to A30 without the board going into post? Thanks, Al K.

I have two sticks. Before A44 either/both sticks worked in slots 1 and 2, neither worked in slots 3 or 4. In fact if a stick was in 3 or 4 it would not post. If a stick was in 1 or 2 and a stick in 3 or 4 it would not post. Any time a stick was in 3 or 4 it would not post. Now after A44 it will not post with any combination of sticks in any slot. Al K.

if its just 2 memory stick this can be normal
From your mainboard manual:
Always insert memory modules in the DIMM2 slot first.

if you try to boot without memory installed in DIMM2 it can refuse to boot.

try to boot with different memory sticks than your current one

Hi,
There is a stick in slot 2 and it will not post. I had sticks in only 1, 2, 3, 4 and two sticks in 1-2, 1-3, 1-4, 2-3, 2-4 and 3-4. Nothing will post after flashing to A44. I even tried with no memory and got the 3 long beeps. That little speaker is very weak. I am thinking my last salvation is another RMA. Any thoughts?  Al K.

if its beeps the cpu is responding, looks like the new BIOS don't work well with your memory.

try borrow a different memory stick, it can boot, if this is works, then you can reflash it to .A30 where your current memory sticks worked before

Your kit is not on memory support list(s)
For some odd reason most kits on memory support are 4 DIMM kits.
BLS2K8G4D240FSA is on the list
CMK16GX4M4A2400C14 is on the list so I believe CMK8GX4M2A2400C14 should be compatible
F4-2400C15Q-16GRR vs F4-2400C15D-8GRR
Or any other 2 DIMM kit that had 2 identical DIMMs of a 4 DIMM kit.

I would stick to memory on the supported list. This should make sure that it's compatible.

DDR4.

It is not how you buy memory for your board. You need to make sure it's compatible, ad that is by MB vendor or memory vendor QVL, or other users reports.
Either way you take your chances when building your own PC, so you may want to increae the odds it will work.

Hi,
Well as much as it seems quirky, I bought memory off the list. While it seemed to have the same specs as my first batch it did work. My Mobo is fully functional and works like a dream. So now I have some DDR4 on the shelf. When the next build occurs I will try to use that.

Thanks to all who helped resolve my self inflicted problems.

I am having the exact same issue you were describing in your original post.

I had originally not ordered RAM that was on the compatibility list and thought after reading this that was my issue. Got RAM from the list and no luck. I tried replacing the older PSU with a brand new one and nothing, I just ordered another motherboard to see if that's the issue now. This has been very frustrating =\

EDIT: Sorry to resurrect a slightly old post. I should probably just start a thread of my own.
