【MSI PRO MOD-S2】 Pink Princess by RandomDesign
« on: 06-September-15, 01:22:07 »

Hi everyone,
This time I will make a little different entry for the contest.

But first let’s take a look at the used hardware:

Mobo: MSI A88XI AC
CPU: AMD A10-7850K
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3-1333 4GB
PSU: Super Flower Leadex Gold 550W
Cooling: Silverstone Tundra TD02-E AiO
SSD: Sandisk Extreme 120GB

The project “Pink Princess” was built at the 24h live modding challenge at gamescom, Cologne, Germany this year. The contest´s theme was “Beauty Case”. That why we decided to build our own female version of a Borderlands Claptrap. Here is our little story behind the concept:

Pink Princess – Hyperion’s latest miscue
Pink Princess is a modified version of Claptrap: a CL4P-TPX steward bot. Annoyed by the permanent crying of Claptrap, Hyperion – in a sudden mood of unexpected empathy – initialized the production of a female fellow for him. The X-upgrade was designed to provide the original version with female attributes. The module, however, interfered with already existing features, which resulted in the amplification of enthusiasm, rate of speaking, megalomania, craziness, and … simplyeverything. Since the non-stop gabbing prototype had driven the developers almost mad, the project was ceased. They removed the wheel to restrict motility and kept her under “top secret” status. But, what they didn’t consider, on Pandora many things may function as vehicle which allowed her to flee, searching for her one and only soul mate.

With this project, I want to show what can be possible to build in (very stressful) 24 hours.
Beforehand we made some sketches and transferred them into 3D, to get a feeling for the measurements and space that we need for the hardware.

Afterwards we also did some more detailed sketches with an exact ratio.

The 24h were split up into 8 hours each day. So we had a total of 3 days.

On the first day we did the major wood work, namely cutting out all the different pieces. We used MDF wood as a compromise between stability and usability.

After all parts were cut out, we primed everything with a layer of black spray paint. We decided to build a pink mod, that’s why we primed all pieces that would be pink later on with white Gesso.

For better stability later on we screwed a square timber to an MDF plate. This will later hold the entire mod.

In addition we also started with the boot part. Therefore we glued some Styrofoam plates together and cut them into shape. This construction will be later put over the square timber to hide it.

And then day one was already over.

At day two we started with finishing up the main parts and also did some detail work.

In the end, the boot should look like assembled from different parts.

So we cut some shapes into the Styrofoam and widened them with a modeling tool.

In addition cables for the LED´s were inserted.

The base was covered with a solid layer of gray paint. We mixed the paint with some sand so we could get a more asphalt-ish look.

Then we finished up the work one the rest of the detail parts, and primed them also with black spray paint.

Furthermore, the construction for the arm was made. Later it was possible to put the arm in any position.

By the end of the day, we assembled the main body part, and painted some of the edges already with pink spray paint.

After day two it was already clear for us, that the last day will be a hell lot of stress ;)

Now for the last day, and last 8 hours of work.
We started by applying the final layer of pink color.

Meanwhile the shoe was also colorized with a pattern of different metal tones.

Because the inside was not very big, the installation of the hardware was a little tricky.

Then we applied the white stripe around the claptrap. And made a final test fitting for the eye and movement sensor.

When there were only 10 minutes left we quickly screwed and glued on the last details. Then we connected the body part with the shoe and base plate. Just in time we drew the black detail line around the white stripe.

And then the 24h were over.

I will post the final pictures tomorrow.

Thanks all.

Yes, girls love this mod. This build was shown at the German case mod champoinships at gamescom in Cologne this year.
Supprisingly, we won 1st Place at the category "Best Beauty Case" (Femael´s choice award)
And 3rd Place "Most Spectacular (Peoples choice award)
Because you have to keep in mind it was build in only 24 hours.

Yes the price is always a difficult question. Except the hardware it was about 150-200 Euro for the materials. Then you have the 24 hours building time and may be 5-10 hours of planning.
So I would build one again for maybe 700-900€ depending on the size and extras.
