Hi,

I am having a problem setting up the graphics on Linux (Ubuntu/Vivid). There is no problem with the VGA port but when I attempt to use the HDMI with a VGA monitor attached (or detached) there are three problems. The first problem is that Linux doesn't report a second screen existing, it just reports one screen "Default" and it simply clones the VGA output to the HDMI. The second problem is that no sound is detected or produced to the HDMI device.  The third problem is that the HDMI connection keeps disconnecting and reconnecting at random intervals 10 to 20 seconds long.  The HDMI device suddenly displays massive corruption and disconnects with a message "Invalid format". It then transitions to No Signal and eventually reconnects. It doesn't go to "invalid format" every time. The HDMI cord is a 3 meter cord with an extender to a 6 meter cord for a combined length of 9 meters.  I'm sure the length of the HDMI cord doesn't help but the cord works fine from two other computers, and from my (now broken) R9 280X video cards.  I would appreciate any help that can be offered on this issue. I'm fairly confident that this is a configuration issue or possibly a problem that the IGD has a design flaw where it can't power long/extended HDMI cords.

To avoid any possible damage to the HDMI device I have disconnected the HDMI cord and am using the VGA port and have temporarily attached the HDMI device to another device that can drive the display without a problem. I did install and run intel-linux-graphics-installer which installed some updates but didn't repair the problem(s).

Is it possible to configure the integrated graphics to drive 2 screens (not cloned)?

Is it possible to configure the integrated graphics to drive HDMI (graphics and sound) with a long extended cord?

How do I configure the HDMI sound to function? It seems likely that the sound not working and the HDMI constantly disconnecting are symptoms of the same problem

One additional technical "oddity". My VGA screen as a preferred resolution of 1368x768 and the HDMI has a preferred resolution of 1360x768 but even without the HDMI attached it uses the 1360x760 resolution.

Note: I used the file generated by X -configure as /etc/X11/xorg.conf but the problems are the same if I run with or without this file.

Best Regards,
  Ralph Ritoch

What graphics driver are you using? The one included with ubuntu? Or did you try using the Intel provided driver? http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2014/05/intel-linux-graphics-driver-installer-1-0-5

Also, what version of Ubuntu are you using?

I am using Ubuntu/Vivid. I downloaded, installed, and executed the intel-linux-graphics-driver-installer. It installed a number of updates but didn't fix the problem.

The first problem was solved by removing 'nomodeset' from the grub/kernel arguments. There is still no sound and the HDMI connection is still somewhat intermittent. After reducing the shared memory to 65MB and increasing the dynamic memory to maximum in the bios the connection is more stable but it does still occasionally disconnect.

Ubuntu/Vivid, please explain what that means? Do you meant Ubuntu 15.04? Or what exactly? Is it a special kernel for Ubuntu?

(bear in mind, my linux knowledge is pretty low and it's been a while since I used one for a daily driver.....)

A few suggestions from googling....

Vivid is 15.04

Either way. The intermittent connection isn't fully solved but the HDMI sound problem was solved by upgrading to kernel 3.19.0-28 , 3.19.0-20 doesn't support Intel HDMI sound.

The HDMI signal has a bit of noise and occasionally disconnects. I'm going to work on better grounding this server which hopefully will help clean up the HDMI signal.
