Nvme support on a msi ge62 2qf
« on: 13-July-16, 07:25:13 »

Hi,

I have the msi ge62 2qf (Haswell) and would like to install a NVME drive on a m.2 slot (the Pci-e one), will the most recent official bios support this?!

Thanks for the support

Hi carloscms23,

No. The M.2 slots in your GE62 2QF only supports SATA. It has nothing to do with the BIOS version. Your 4th-gen (Haswell) Intel chipset simply does not support PCIe NVMe on M.2. You need a notebook with a 6th-gen (Skylake) CPU and chipset if you want to use an M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD.

Kind regards, David

(This is probably a bit late, but...)

I can confirm that the newest 2TB QLC NVMe SSD from Intel does work correctly in an older Apache Pro GE62 2QF (the one with i7 4720 CPU), it is even shown as a potential boot device (but that I didn't try, I don't trust QLC enough to make it my system disk).

Hi marcin.gomulkiewicz,

That's good to know. It's a shame that MSI doesn't update their notebook storage device document to reflect this information. Unfortunately for us users, we have no way of knowing which of the older models with Haswell chipsets have "combo" M.2 slots (that's what they must be to support both SATA and PCIe---all NVMe are PCIe). Since MSI didn't offer M.2 PCIe NVMe SSDs back then, the motherboards may not even be marked with "PCIe".

Kind regards, David
