Howdy,

This motherboard is meant to be able to run RAM at up to 3200mhz. I can't get this to run above 2400mhz at all, even with XMP enabled. Is there anything you can do to help? RAM speeds have a massive impact on this chips performance and I feel a bit misled considering this board is advertised as being able to handle speeds up to 3200mhz - I'd like to get my Ram to run at 3000Mhz, but can't get it to post at anything past 2400mhz at all.

Any help would be massively appreciated. Bios version 1.14.

Specs Below:
MSI B350 Tomahawk
AMD Ryzen 1700x
Corsair Vengeance LPX 3000mhz RAM
Sapphire RX480 Nitro OC
Sandisk 480GB SSD
Corsair CX750m PSU
Corsair Spec Alpha - White/Red Case
Acer G246 75hz freesync monitor

Cheers!

You are using ram that is meant for 3000 on Intel systems. Like all DDR4 ram currently available it is not verified for such speeds on the completely new architecture AMD platform. Your kit's speed rating is therefor irrelevant on an AMD platform board. Therefor it is not guaranteed to reach such results. 3200 is the maximum ram overclocking supported by the board. It is not guaranteed that you can run your kit or any Intel verified 3200 kit as such clockrates. Like always oc can fail or work. Also note that XMP is an Intel feature. AMD does not support XMP. XMP working at all on AMD boards is a workaround all board manufacturers implemented to make use of currently available ram. Still it is by far not guaranteed that these values will also work.

You will need to see if you can improve your ram results tweaking with voltage and timings.

I've got 3200MHz rated Corsair Vengeance LED ram, 2x8GB. I made damn sure to get a single sided! kit. Meaning you only have chips on one side of your ram stick - the memory controller can handle this easier, meaning you can reach higher clocks.

Afaik the B350 supports 2933 or 3200, but not necessarily in-between. I used the motherboard's XMP function and added a slight amount of voltage to the NB (1.05v) and it seems to run fine on 3200MHz now using the RAM's XMP profile.

I'm also running bios 115.

Flashed to Beta 1.15 BIOS.
Ram overclocking in BIOS is still an oddity. I can at times set 2400 manually but A-XMP fails to hit the set speed. Alway drops back down to 2134.
In Ryzen Master I can get my RAM to clock to 2400 with ease. Latency doesn't match XMP profiles but it works and tested 16-17-17-17-35
I can get the rate 2666 speed with 16-18-18-18-44 but only if the processor is overclocked to 3850 and the CPU core voltage is set to 1.35 with VDDCR SOC set to 1.2. Ram voltage set to 1.32 (Won't go to 1.35 on Ryzen Master) and Mem VTT set to .610. I've tried getting 2666 ram speed with just the voltage settings but no dice. The CPU has to also be at 3.85 to get the speed.

Please note I could not get my RAM to any of the speeds that Ryzen Master achieved using the MSI Command Center Software. I was going to buy the validated memory

shown on the compatibility page but now I'm doubtful that would even work.

If I were you, i'd totally stick with the memory on MSI compatibility list (Those memory is more likely to be verified by MSI). Also, you need to refer to "supported speed", it's not 100% that the memory can go up to the XMP speed as Flobelix already mentioned that it's for Intel but not AMD platform. By the way, I kinda just went through the ASUS QVL too and I can't find any Corsair Vengence 3000 memory, My guess is this behaviour is not only seen on MSI platform :(

Yes I specifically checked that RAM's supported "Ryzen" speed. My main concern is that on the HyperX page it is not listed in the QVL yet MSI has it on the list. I'm tempted to buy it but then I'd have two stick of Corsair floating around. Ah WTH I'm buying it. I'll post results in two days.

See this makes me think there is a problem with the LPX 3000 chips themselves with this board/cpu combo. no one with the 3000 chipps are able to overclock anything high on the memory side. i think this are going back and im getting a set of 3200s to test back to back.

Well Well looks like the HyperX Predator 3333 DDR4 memory clocks to 3200 no problemo. Although this frequency is not shown in the supported frequencies list of the MSI compatability page. However the timings are the same as for the 3333 speed profile. I couldn't set the frequency to 3332 in BIOS or overclocking utilities. They all stop at 3200. This set runs for others on intel at 3500 and 3333 no promblemo so I think we just may be able to do the same for Ryzen. And the processor definitely seems to love faster memory. System appears to run much faster. Benchmarks have also shown this to be true.

The way I understand it, right now AMD has it locked at 3200 for the time being. It should become unlocked at a later date via a bios update, if I've understood everything correctly.

Quote
Not sure how to screenshot my BIOS without using a camera. However it was straight forward to set. For this specific ram I turned off A-XMP and set the timing 16,18,18,18,36 and frequency to 3200. I also set voltage to 1.35 but I think AUTO would work. After that it booted with ram timed to 3200. If you use the specified A-XMP profile for 3333 it will boot but at 2400 (fallback). If you use the specified A-XMP profile 2 shown as supported in the MSI compatibility list it boots to 3000.  Please note you can get 3200 with A-XMP on using the Ryzen Master Overclocking utility. For some odd reason if you set it there, even with A-XMP on in the BIOS, it will reboot and start up at 3200. So if you want to save on power you can always leave your BIOS at the 3000 A-XMP profile and set up your CPU and RAM Overclock profile in Ryzen Master for those times you need the extra Juice.

OK Looks like the LPX 3000 Memory is single sided but the LPX 3200 while also single sided its also based on samsung memory modules. this may be making all of the difference.

Samsung memory modules worked best on Z170 platforms. Followed by Micron. Followed by everything else (Toshiba mostly, I think?).....

It wouldn't surprise me if AMD had the same problems......

Running 16 gb (8x2) of Corsair dominator platinum 3000 MHz @ 2633 MHz right now with bios 1.15, can confirm that memory speed really makes a difference to my Ryzen 1700X.

Going to flash bios 1.21 now and will post if there are any improvements with memory speed.

Ya 2633 is possible with the 3000 I was able to get it too. Anything higher just won't work.

Let m elbow about the bios I'm going to try that and the 3200 side by side with the 3000 tomorrow. Will update

I can confirm that neither 2933 or 3200 work still (Bios 1.21) ... A-XMP enabled, CPU NB 1.05v Ram 1.35/1.37v.  No dice.  2667 still works flawless, though, and post time has dramatically decreased for me.  It was never as long as people have stated (1 min), mine was more like an extra 35-40 seconds, but now it's about 25 after power-on.  Getting there MSI.  Getting there.  Fix the RAM issue and you'll have the best AM4 board non-x370 on the market.  As it stands, it's number 2.

Jumped on 1.21 Bios today from 1.15. Post time pretty much same but memory is seeing small improvement. Right now my G.Skill F4-3200C14-8GVK 2x8GB (1rank Samsung B) is stable on @2933 14 14 14 34 cr1 (1,36V DDR; 1,062V NB). Slowly MSI are moving in right direction ( at least for me). Alas 3200MHz is still too elusive for me :noidea:

Ok confirmed in a true back to back test that the Corsair LPX 3000 memory that does not have the Samsung base chips is junk. It would only got to 2400 at 1.35 volts. Just installed the LPX 3200 chips, set it to 2933, left everything on auto and it booted first time!

Do not buy any memory under 3200 for RYZEN period.

now running at 3200 on the LPX 3200 chips! NB voltage needed to be brought up to 1.1 to make it stable but awesome stuff!

On bios 1.21 not btw

Gonna try bumping the nb up from the 1.05 i was using.   Ram volts at 1.35 still correct?

What's the max nb volts one can put on a stock 1700?

Yup still at 1.35. I could probably bump it to 1.36. I saw some slight instability.

Max recommend NB is 1.15 I Believe

It's a no go on the 3200mhz, even 2933, even with 1.1nb volts and 1.36 ram volts.

Quick question.  Are you using the Wraith Spire cooler?  If so, how do you use LED colors other than Red, Yellow and Green?  Only colors that work via MSI gaming app.

Man... Sound like either your ram or your board may be faulty...

I'm using CMK16GX4M2B320016R and it is running great now. I would email the ram if I were you and try another set of sticks

My MoBo using 1.21 has been very good

Oh I forgot to say I just have the fan plugged in either he once CPU fan cable and the red LED is on. I would not change that anyway. I did try the RGB cable once but did not care for it

It runs at 2667 just fun no hiccups.  I ran 3200mhz in mobo release bios and it was fine for a couple days.  Shut my pc off completely, turned off psu switch, came back the next day and it cycle booted until bios was reset.  Now I'm having the same probs everyone else is with not being able to run above 2667.  Ram is running just fine afaik.  :<  I'm very patient, and 2667 is providing with enough.  I'm just the guy that wants his stuff running at advertised specs.  :D  Not blaming anyone but myself for this haha.  Here's to hoping!

Memtest86 pulled back zero errors.  RAM is as mint as it gets.  I think I just need to continue my patience and fiddle with whatever new BIOS versions come out.  Just simple (adjust nb, dram volts, frequency.  Doesn't work, reset to 2667 and leave it until the next version and rinse and repeat.)  2667 runs stable and stronger than 2133, so I'm cool with that until the BIOS allows me to keep my 3200mhz stable.

Other than that... I love Ryzen :)  Love MSI.  Just wish I could use more colors than just red, yellow, orange and green on my CPU cooler.   Maybe it's the MOTHERBOARD being limited to only red?  Maybe it's the MSI software only allowing a certain amount of colors?  However, even when I select purple in the Gaming app, both ver x.x.x.20 and x.x.x.18, purple will turn it to red, green will turn it to red, red will turn it to green, yellow will turn it to orange, white will turn it to yellow, blue will turn it off.

the color problem you just mention....are you talking about the motherboard or LED stripe on JLED?? if it's something on JLED, make sure the pin connector layout is 12V/G/R/B

The motherboard strip can only light up red, I'm aware of that.  I'm referring to the AMD Wraith Spire cooler, with both cable plugged in (1xCPU FAN HEADER and 1xJLED_Header).  When I try to manipulate the Wraith Spire cooler led to flash a color other than RED using the MSI GAMING APP, the only 3 colors that it changes to, regardless of the selected color in the gaming app, are Red, Green, Yellow, Orange or Off.

I have Extended LED on.  The Animation is breathing.   If I plug the RGB header in backwards, will it still function but not properly?  I wouldn't assume so... reason I haven't unplugged the connector and tried plugging it in flipped.

Well I'll be darned.   I had the connector plugged in backwards.  Figured it just wouldn't be allowed manipulation if it wasn't plugged in properly.  Yay, purple breathing wraith spire cooler! :D

Hey all.  I've OC'd my 1700 to 3.7 just fine with stock voltage but I'm having issues with my RAM

I purchased
http://www.corsair.com/dominator-platinum-series-16gb-2-x-8gb-ddr4-dram-3000mhz-c15-memory-kit-cmd16gx4m2b3000c15
off of Corsair's compatability page but I can't get it any higher than 2466.  I've never overclocked RAM before so I'm not quite sure what I'm doing at this point.

I flashed my BIOS to 1.10 release today. This is a MSI Tomahawk. There is a new feature in the BIOS on the 1.10 release A-XMP. I set it to that and the system rebooted with my modules running at PC3200 14-14-14 timings 1.35v. This is a gskill trident Z 2x8GB pc3200 cl14 set.

Is the official 1.1 more stable and improved than the latest beta for this board?

I tried the A-XMP setting but it sets it down to 2133.

These are the modules I have.  It may be that A-XMP in this BIOS release has a greater degree of compatibility with my modules than yours.

I suspect if you give it time eventually more improvements will be issued in newer BIOS releases.  If I were you I'd be patient and wait before spending more money on memory modules or trying beta BIOS.  Just my opinion.

If after a few months you are still stuck where you're at then you may want to think about replacing your modules for faster speeds.

BIOS 1.33 was the worst. While it added some nice "Memory Try It" feature. No matter what I did I could not get back to 3200. Whereas BIOS 1.31 was almost plug-n-play. Just select the A-XMP profile and all good. With 1.33 BIOS nothing would work and the machine would cycle 5 times before booting to 2400 memory speed. Mind you not even the supported/tested speed (3000) would boot with BIOS 1.33. Anyhow I'll stay at version 1.31 until a few more beta versions come out. I'm mostly interested to see when we get the option for higher clock speeds than 3200. Ryzen processors seem to do extremely well at higher memory speeds and latency doesn't seem to affect it much.

I haven't tried the beta BIOS.  1.10 release BIOS introduced A-XMP.
I could enable A-XMP and system boots fine and sets all correct timings and voltages on the memory modules.  PC3200 14-14-14-34-1T 1.35v.

Everything seemed fine.  Games played, windows seemed OK.  However it wasn't.  System would reboot from a bugcheck if left idling overnight.
Turned A-XMP to off.  Set memory back to 2400mhz.  So far no more bugchecks.

I've got 3200MHz rated Corsair Vengeance LED ram, 2x8GB. I made damn sure to get a single sided! kit. Meaning you only have chips on one side of your ram stick - the memory controller can handle this easier, meaning you can reach higher clocks.
the memory controller did not care about single or double sided ... it cares about single rank or dual rank :)
