B350 tomahawk unstable
« on: 28-May-17, 05:43:45 »

I have the ryzen 5 1600 with 2x4gb ram, I've already updated the bios to the latest. It doesn't really matter what ram speed I'm on but in Windows there's times if I'm on chrome, it takes forever to load a website, if I try refreshing it the whole pc crashes and I have to reset the computer. Sometimes even opening a folder or extracting crashes the PC. I've noticed gaming on BF1 (rx480 8gb) these symbols appear and/or recording with AMD relive crashes the pc also. I am using the Corsair vengeance lpx ram (I don't think it's on the compatibility list) and CM tx3 evo CPU cooler with a noctua fan.

I suggest to start your computer with default settings (no overclock) and see if the problem exist.

I doubt it's that causing the pc to crash? Unless I have to do a fresh install.

It could. Without seeing the computer in person, its very difficult to determine what the computer is doing.

It could also be any hardware components. Hardware failures often are because of RAM, or storage devices. Since the system is new, I would then focus on the RAM. Replace it if necessary.

Yh especially when AMD is new to ddr4. Well there was the new update we'll just have to hope MSI adds new update. I'm using this ram which wasn't listed in the compatibility section, I haven't tried any OC either. :

Its not really due to DDR4 being used. It is because the entire architecture is completely new and the IMC is not completely stable. AMD has always been terrible with RAM support, and using overclocked modules always had problems (at least from my experience).

You can try removing the RAM overclock and run it at 2400 or 2133 MHz.

I've tried lower settings and still crashes, I've also tried the reinstall of origins. I think the highest the ram is 2667 (xmp1) but still same result. Is there anyway if I can get the Devs of MSI to test my ram for a better chance of an update or something? I've also noticed the CPU temps are quite high in the uefi around 50c but in speedfan it doesn't detect any of the fans except the GPU and ssd temps I'm guessing they don't have ryzen support yet.
Edit: I was wondering if this board even has a speaker connector for the beeps or does it only use the POST LEDs? I couldn't find it anywhere in the manual?

You'll have to contact MSI directly for any inquiries about QVL testing for RAM. Most likely they aren't going to offically test other modules. If you cannot get the current modules working you should return them and get modules on the QVL list.

High temperatures may indicate the the HSF isn't installed correctly. Although, it could also be normal. I don't have a AM4 system to confirm.

Speenfan may need an update to parse information from AM4 chipsets. Personally, I use HWMonitor.

The board has speaker (and buzzer) connection, so you can plug in a speaker.

I hope I don't have to return them, I just won a bid on them for a decent price too. I could try the beta bios but I don't trust it, it could brick it. I know there is the new agesa update so I'm pretty sure there should be a new update anytime soon. Thanks for helping me I appreciate it.

The BETA bios is the update with AGESA 1.0.0.6 in it....hence the reason others and myself are suggesting it.

check your windows installation for errors. Run this in elevated command prompt, sfc /scannow and checkdisk. It may fix your problem with freezing in windows.

Thanks, and may I ask what the whql support is for?

Edit: flashes the new bios, I've also put the speaker buzzer in. Now it does 2 shorts beeps, and the led shows something wrong with the vga as it's not displaying anything.

For the most part you can ignore it.
But....

It is to enable full UEFI support. If you setup your computer correctly, and all your hardware are UEFI ready, you want to enable this, and disable CSM

Probably means the wires are swapped or the connector is in backwards?
I'm not familiar with that case so I'm not sure exactly how it's supposed to work.

I've tried it but it's correct, and when it freezes still( even after beta bios) the HDD light's go off. I'm starting to think I need to reinstall bios, I still have my old HDD with win 10 on their. Dunno if I should test that and see what happens.

Please be more descriptive.

Where does it freeze? When? How often? Is it repeatable?
Is it during a game? On the desktop? When you open up a web browser?

I've had the same problem with freezing when going to sleep through leaving the computer idle. I haven't had any trouble manually entering and exiting sleep but if it goes to sleep from sitting too long it won't respond to anything and I have to hard reset it. I am using the ryzen balanced power profile and I noticed that by default it is set to never go to sleep, but I changed that parameter to go to sleep after 30 min. Haven't left it sitting that long often but just happened recently and seems to happen consistently when sleeping from idle. I had some other weird freezing and blue screens early on but after clean reinstalling Windows and updating bios I haven't had any freezing other than this sleep issue. Maybe it is related to the ryzen balanced profile?

Yes even sometimes if I'm on a chrome a page takes long and eventually crashes. If you've reinstalled windows and it still freezes then I'm not going to reinstall. What RAM are you using? Is on the qvl list.

Hello,

If you didn't install Windows on this PC then you should consider doing so.

RX 480 max power consumption?
Ryzen 5 1600 max power consumption?
+ all your hardaware?

XFX TS430W with a single 33A rail?

Swap out the RX480 if you have a cheap GFX card and test the Windows stability, like browsing webpages, downloading...

Like the other user said it still had problems. I used to have an fx6300 which was at 95w I'm pretty sure the 1600 is at 65w, yes the PSU is 430w and 33 on the 12v rail (single). I could try with my old HDD and see if it's the same (that was the original HDD but cloned data to SSD). I would have to borrow another card somewhere.

Please be more descriptive.

Where does it freeze? When? How often? Is it repeatable?
Is it during a game? On the desktop? When you open up a web browser?
I'm getting clock watch dog timeout.

I've reinstalled to anniversary update and then to creators seems to be working fine.

Update to the anniversary versions let me know if it's stable mine is stable now.

I did a fresh install, still had issues with freezing and watchdog timeout bsod so then I downloaded the anniversary iso and installed that and it disappeared, you might need to go onto amd website and install the ryzen chipset driver don't get the one on MSI (not sure if there's a difference but I followed a YouTube tutorial). I'm also using the 1.62 beta bios.
