MSI WT75 – The Premier Solution for Professionals
« on: 04-December-18, 12:00:52 »

While MSI’s gaming laptops are renowned worldwide, the Taiwanese manufacturer also offers a line of high-end workstation models that serves professionals in countless industries including film, architecture, and graphic design. As designers often have to meet clients, portability without a sacrifice in performance is ideal. Equipped with the Quadro P5200 graphics card, the best available workstation card on the market, as well as the latest Intel® Xeon® processor, the WT75 8SM more than meets any challenges that come its way.

Sleek Exterior Design

Along the bottom of the laptop, there is expansive ventilation, as well as thick rubber feet that separate the machine from its resting surface. Featuring MSI’s top-of-the-line Cooler Boost Titan technology (2 fans each with 29 blades as well as a total of 10 heat pipes), the WT75 8SM stays cool even while undertaking demanding tasks. The Dynaudio woofer is a major contributor to the WT75 8SM’s booming, 3D sound.

The WT75 8SM offers a variety of ports. The left side provides (L to R) three USB3.1 Gen2 ports and a bevy of audio jacks: line out, line in, microphone, and headphones.

The right side features (L to R) a smart card reader, two more USB 3.1 Gen2 ports, an SD card reader, as well as a Kensington lock towards the rear (not pictured).

The rear of the WT75 8SM offers (L to R) an Ethernet port (RJ45), Mini-DisplayPort, USB 3.1 Gen2 Type-C/DP/ Thunderbolt™3, HDMI (4k @ 60Hz), and the power input.

The chiclet keyboard, backlit in white, provides good depth and feedback for a smooth typing experience. The spacious trackpad just below it includes a small fingerprint sensor at its top-left corner for easy log-in using Windows Hello.

120Hz Color-Accurate Screen

120Hz refresh rate for immediate response

The WT75 8SM’s display can either be configured with Full HD (1920 x 1080, 120Hz, 3ms, Wide-View, 94%NTSC) or UHD (3840 x 2160, IPS-Level, 60Hz, 100% Adobe RGB). The model tested was equipped with a FHD display – gorgeous colors with excellent viewing angles. This model also includes the Matrix Display feature that supports 4k output for 3 external monitors. The 120Hz refresh rate was noticeably smoother and therefore caused less eyestrain.

Optimize Performance with Dragon Center
Dragon Center is an application in the latest MSI laptops that tracks and optimizes system usage according to user needs.

CPU, GPU, memory, and disk usage; device information (processor and graphics card model names, RAM, SSD/HDD usage); loading status (power plan, Ethernet/Wi-Fi transfer, fan speeds)

Different settings can be chosen depending on needs and preferences.

The Mobile Center allows control of your MSI Workstation from a mobile device. Establish a mobile connection and install “MSI Dragon Dashboard” on your mobile device to begin.

High-End Components for Blazing Speeds

The WT75 8SM features the Intel Xeon E-2176G processor along with 32GB DDR4-2400 RAM. The Xeon E-2176G is a 64-bit hexa-core high-end performance x86 workstation microprocessor introduced in mid-2018. Based on the Coffee Lake microarchitecture, the E-2176G operates at 3.7 GHz with a thermal design power (TDP) of 80 W and a turbo boost of 4.7 GHz.

Compared to the popular Core i7-8750H, the Xeon E-2176G has a higher operating frequency as well a larger cache. The higher power demand allows for steady performance.

The WT75 8SM scored very highly on Cinebench’s processor test which uses all of your system's processing power to render a photorealistic 3D scene.

Here are the Cinebench results of the popular Core i7-8750 processor:

The Xeon E-2176G outperforms the Core i7-8750H in both single-core (by 5.1%) and multi-core (by 18.2%) testing:

The Power of Quadro

While NVIDIA’s popular GeForce graphics cards are designed for gaming, its Quadro series is optimized for professional design. Given the importance of speed in a game, a GeForce card can shut down textures, shading, or rendering after approximating a final output in order to keep the frame rate high.

A Quadro card tends to complete all rendering operations even if that causes delays, prioritizing accuracy and quality. This is of course more suitable for intricate 3D models that a Workstation can handle smoothly while a gaming system cannot – the complexity of these projects is also the reason for the higher RAM on Quadro cards (16GB DDR5 for the Quadro P5200).

The WT75 8SM also produced excellent results on SPECviewperf 13:

The WT75 8SM features a 128GB SATA SSD as well as two 256GB NVMe SSDs in a RAID 0 configuration. The SSDs proved their worth in both reading and writing tests:

Battery Life

As a high-performance machine, the WT75 8SM should be plugged in when running demanding programs for optimal performance. When using the UMA graphics in lieu of the Quadro card, battery life can last as long as five hours.

Heat and Noise Levels
When idle or running non-demanding programs, the WT75 8SM is noiseless. Comfort Mode can be chosen in Dragon Center when system demand is not high. When CPU/GPU overclocking is executed, Sport Mode can be selected in Dragon Center – with fans on the Cooler Boost setting, the CPU temperature will remain below 85°C.
Thanks to the Cooler Boost Titan system, heat is not an issue. The area above the keyboard (below the display) is warm during heavy use, but resting the hands on the keyboard is never uncomfortable.

Conclusion

The MSI WT75 8SM is a top-of-the-line system for professionals. Its many ISV certifications ensure its reliability with a myriad of programs such as AutoDesk, Dassault Systems, and the Adobe suite. With MSI’s great cooling technology, the user needn’t worry about temperature even when under heavy use. Finally, MSI’s Dragon Center enhances the user experience, maximizing its abundant resources.
