How many CPU PSU plugs to attach?
« on: 11-January-19, 08:36:41 »

Hi, I just set up a new build with the following:

- MSI X299 CREATION motherboard
- Intel i9-9980XE processor
- 64Gb Corsair 3200 Mhz (4x16Gb) memory
- MSI Geforce RTX 2080 Gaming X Trio 8Gb graphics
- Seasonic Prime 1000W Titanium PSU

So, my problems are these...

1) The motherboard has 3 connectors for CPU power. My Seasonic PSU comes with only 2 CPU-PSU cables. Do I need to use all 3 connectors on the motherboard? Can I use only 1, maybe 2? Do I need to contact Seasonic for another CPU-PSU cable to use the computer? (I do not overclock.)

2) There is a 4-Pin PCIE_PWR1 connector below the PCI-E slots. Is this also a necessary power connection, or only for use with cards the draw a lot of current?

Please help… I don't want to damage this computer... Thanks, Tommy

1: with that board you need to connect CPU-PWR_1 and CPU-PWR_2 and leave the 3rd empty

2: the 6 PIN PCIE_PWR1 is for if your using more then one graphics card to supply extra power to the PCI-E slots.

the 3rd is if your going to be trying to overclock the CPU alot. thats why it has a 3rd for extra power that is needed to push as much power to the CPU as them chips can pull upto 500w when overclocked!

With an Intel i9-9980XE  I would seriously use the 3rd cpu power connector as well. Even if not overclocking.

Would using only 2 poer connectors be why my system is unstable using XMP to get the full 3200 Mhz from my memory?

above 2666Mhz is never Guaranteed as its classed as a overclock as its above what Intel has validated

Memory Specifications

Max Memory Size (dependent on memory type)   128 GB
Memory Types   DDR4-2666
Max # of Memory Channels   4
ECC Memory Supported   N

if you want to make 100% sure either get an adapter or a additional 8 pin CPU power line for your PSU but i doubt its the issue. i would suspect the Memory Controller in your CPU is just not capable of being stable at 3200MHZ

As badboy said 3200 is not guaranteed to work anyway.

Still that would not only mean oc for the ram but the cpu (memory controller) as well. I stand by my statement to also use 3rd power connector for the ultimate cpu for this socket you have.

Okay, I appreciate the advice... Well, I ordered another CPU power cable for my Seasonic 1000W PSU since it only came with two. I attached it to the third connector on the mobo the other day and things seemed fine. However, I shut down and rebooted and the  computer wouldn't boot up again. All the lights came on, but nothing happened. The status LED on the motherboard read "00", although it might have been "D0" for "CPU Initialization Error"... Not sure.

Anyway, I kept attempting to reboot, but the same problem occurred. I went in and unplugged the new cable and rebooted. It started up and went into Windows. I then shut down and replugged in the cable. I also gave a little push to the CPU connector to make sure it was in firmly. All seemed okay. When I started it again, it booted normally, and has been running fine for days.

Any idea what happened? The system seems to run about the same as it did with just 2 CPU power connections. Cinebench CPU score is still around 3733. Does anyone think I might have caused any damage, even though it seems to run okay?

Just a bit nervous... Thanks!

The cable had most likely just not been seated properly the first time. If all went fine then there is nothing to worry. If something would have gone really wrong with cpu power the system would not work at all.

Additional performance is not to be expected with just a 3rd connector. It is just to have absolutely stable power despite the enormous power draw of a 9980XE
