Flashing BIOS for B450M Bazooka
« on: 12-January-19, 08:19:21 »

MSI B450M Bazooka

I'm following these instructions to update my BIOS via MFlash:

https://storage-asset.msi.com/file/pdf/How_to_flash_the_BIOS.pdf

It states:

Quote
Open your case and look for the MS-XXXX number and the version number on the motherboard between the PCI slots

and

Quote
Download the BIOS that match your motherboard and version number to your USB device.

On my motherboard, it says: "MS-7A38 VER: 3.0":

On the MSI website, I found these two:

https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/support/B450M-BAZOOKA
https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/support/B450M-BAZOOKA-V2

I'm assuming the 1st one is Version 1.0 and the 2nd one is Version 2.0 but I couldn't find Version 3.0.  Which one am I suppose to use?

Hello,
Use: https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/support/B450M-BAZOOKA. Currently, you have the first bios version VH.00 available since 2018-06-21. It corresponds to what is displayed in the Bios Setup header. You can also verify with the cardbox:

BTW, do not fear: M-Flash is really secured (sometimes, even too much) so it shall refuse to load a bios file for another model!
To update, do exactly that:
- Download >>Bios VH.30<<.
- Take an USB pen having no more than 16GB (physical size) with only one partition.
   Verify it with CHKDSK.
- Unzip it and copy the file "E7A38AMS.H30" on the root of the USB pen.
- Plug the USB pen into one 2.0 port of the back panel (those below the PS/2).
- Boot and enter in Bios Setup. Press <F6>, confirm, press <F10> and confirm.
  Pc should restart.
- Enter again in Bios Setup and click on M-Flash then select the file on the USB pen.
- M-Flash should start; be cautious to not abort it before the end (can last up to 5mn).
- Power off PSU, unplug the power cord and wait that all mobo's leds light off.
- Power on and enter again in Bios Setup to set back all bios values you have changed before the update.
Have a good day,

Thank you.  Can I ask what the purpose of these two extra steps are?

Before to update bios it is highly recommended to reset bios values to default because the version to be loaded can add or remove some. Some users bricked their mobo after a bios load without doing that. Some recommend even to clear CMOS before and load default at the next restart just before to update... Personally, I always press <F16> and save before to run M-Flash.

MSI Team said it must be done for some mobo models and some bios version, especially AMD based mobos, because else update could break the mobo. Personally, I do always because it cannot be bad.
Have good day,

Forgot to ask one question:

Any particular reason why you recommend plugging the flash drive into the back panel and why 2.0?

Plug the USB pen into one 2.0 port of the back panel (those below the PS/2).

Why not a front USB port and why not 3.0?

Hello,
It is only by caution! Normally, it should work also with other USB ports (2.0, 3.0, back and front). Personally, I always prefer to use the most reliable ports for a such critical action.
Friendly yours,
