z370 m5 fan headers low rpm's w/ 100% speed
« on: 15-January-19, 20:23:04 »

hello,

i have 3 corsair ML 140m fans which only reach 1700 rpms when at 100% connected to individual fan headers, this is 300 rpms below max rated. i have x1 120m ML corsair fan on its own header which reaches its max rated rpm of 2400. all fan headers are in PWM mode in bios using fan curves. 3 different monitoring programs all read 1700 rpm max. not sure why the 3 ML 140m fans are not reaching their 2000 rpm max speed.

is it a psu issue,  mobo, the msi command center app ?

i5 8600k | 1080ti | 850w evga G2 psu | 280m rad clc | bios 1.6 | current chipset drivers |

any ideas why speeds are low?

thanks

Hi,

Other than using the three different monitoring programs have you set the fans to 100% in the BIOS Hardware monitor to check what the max RPM's are for each fan?

Just for testing purposes you can also set the fan headers to DC mode with all fan curve points at (100%) 12V to see if there are any changes in the max RPM's, please note that the ML Pro fans require constant 12V to operate.

Do you have an extra PC or friends/family with PC's to help test the fans?

hi, thank you for the reply.

i have set x1 120m ML fan and x1 140 ML fan to both DC mode and force constant 12v. the 120m is 2400 rpms, which is its rated max rpm. the 140m is 1900 rpm, 100 rpm less then max.

i have two other ML 140m fans on my evga clc 280 rad mount in the front as intake in my s340 elite. the x2 140m fans on the rad are connected to the fan headers coming off the pump, which is connected to the cpu fan header i assume controlling both pump and the 2 fans mounted on the rad?

do i need to connect the rad fans like that? can i use x1 140m rad fan connected to cpu fan head, the pump connected to my pump header and the other rad fan connected to a system fan header? evga video i watched on the clc said to connect it as i currenlty have it.

thanks

edit:  i only have access to the one pc atm, i can piece together an old build to test if needed.its z170 msi m7 mobo. would need to assemble the pc and install windows fresh. which i dont mind, but nice to solve otherwise :)

Have you installed the EVGA software/drivers to control the CLC fans and pump? You need to set the header to 100% 12V DC Mode and control the CLC fans and pump with the software.

https://www.evga.com/support/download/

https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/evga-clc-280-rgb-cpu-cooler,5302.html

Some manufactures allow a variance of ±10% for fan max operating speeds.

hi krank, thanks again.

I believe this has been solved, for the most part. the 2 rad fans are 100 rpm slower then rated but its now setup properly, i believe. the pump is connected with the 2 rad fans,  plugged into cpu fan header which is in DC mode @ 12v with evga flow control fan curves. flow control adjusts rpms depending.

still am interested in using 1rad fan attached to cpu header, the pump attached to pump header and the other rad fan attached to system header. would that be another way to operate it?

thx

Yes you can connect it that way, the pump needs to be set to DC mode and the fans to PWM mode.

I have 11 ML120 Pro fans connected to my Z370 Gaming Pro Carbon motherboard with fan splitter cables and the pump speed sensor is still connected to the CPU fan header.
