MSI X48 platinum CPU switch from Q9550 to QX9650
« on: 30-January-19, 12:44:48 »

Dear,

After many years :-). I bought a QX9650 for a few bucks and want to insert into my system, hopefully to get it a little bit overclocked so my rig can stand some more years, like a refurbished oldtimer car.
My system is according to CPU-Z.
Q9550 2.83Ghz, C1
Platinum X48 MS-7353 1.0 running bios v2.5 from 12/8/2009
Memory : 4*2GB corsair CMZ8GX3M4X1600C9 at 1.5V.
(NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760)
My question is, do just need swap the CPU and boot, or is there any preliminary work to be done.

Thanks for your effort,

Eddy Kunnen

Both CPU's require the same minimum BIOS in order to be supported.
You should be able to just swap the CPU's and go from there without any issues.

Dear,

Machine is up and running. I could OC the processor on stockvoltage using the multiplier (9->11) till 3.66 GHz and runs rocksolid on prime95. But it seems to be that that is the limit. Any increase in frequency using multiplier (12, 4000Ghz), or FSB 333-340 gives me BSOD after some time. Even if I increase the voltage of the CPU. Is there any change I get this system to e.g. 4Ghz with 4*2GB RAM or should I knock it off here and be happy?

Any advice is welcome (at slow pace),

Eddy

I'm guessing that is probably the most you'll get out of it.

I think the CPU should not be the problem, maybe the throughput towards the memory, if I remember that could be a bottle neck for this board. FSB is at 333Hz with memory at 444Hz. Does it make sense to increase the memory numbers CAS, or wouldn't that not make a difference on the stress for the northbridge?
