MSI H61M-E23 B3 BIOS update issue
« on: 19-April-19, 09:27:46 »

I have managed to update the BIOS to 10E using the AFUDE application.

I now want to update the BIOS to 12.0 to support my i5-3330 IvyBridge CPU.

I have formatted my flash drive to FAT32 and made it bootable.

I have have downloaded the file 7680vC0.zip to my desktop.

I have extracted the file to my flash drive.

I have then double cllicked the file and a box comes up saying 'System will auto reboot after BIOS update.

I click 'Agree' and then click 'OK'.

It then says 'Current BIOS AE0' and 'New BIOS C.00'.

The bars run across the screen and then it reboots.

All it does after that is go back into windows without updating the BIOS.

Current CPU is G620 Sandybridge.
8GB Corsair Memory
Windows 10 PRO 64bit Version 1809.

Does anyone have any suggestions or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks in advance.

Regarding the flash follow the below to update to C30 (aka 12.3) which is the latest version. Note that you must use the bios archive linked and nothing you downloaded so far.

A.) Download >>this bios archive<< (!) archive and place it on your desktop. Do not decompress.
B.) Download and install the >>the MSI HQ Forum USB flasher<<
C.) Insert your FAT32 formatted usb stick.
D.) Make sure the legacy USB is enabled.
E.) Start the forum flash tool and select option 1. Then point the tool at the compressed archive we downloaded earlier. Then to your USB Flash Drive.
F.) Boot to the USB and follow the directions. MEMTEST is included with the forum flash tool and it is recommended to run this prior to any flash.

Thanks so much for your reply.

After running memtest and then going to flash the BIOS I get the following meesage:

Warning: The length of data to write to flash extends past the end of the flash memory.
              Start address: 0x00000000
              Write length: 8388608
              Total flash size: 4096KB
Do you want to truncate the data and continue Y / N or Q to quit.

At this point I quit.

Is it safe to continue and hit Y?

Thanks in advance.

Excellent post. Helped me on my same M, no issues. Perfect. My first USB did not work, probably it was not suitable for booting(a very old 1GB USB). I flashed a newer USB which had bootable grub ISO, and saved my image and did exactly as per post.

Thanks again

Right, so recently I experienced this exact issue on one of our machines. We had 3 in the building with the mboard H61M-E23 B3. Two of which wouldn't update via the exe provided by MSI.

We experienced the same issue being unable to update the bios past v10E or AE. Any V12 or higher would just run the bar through and reboot with no mention of the bios updating. So we came here andfollwed suggestions and tried using the tool here as well as a free Dos usb with the update exe and the E7680IMS.C30 file. All of which failed.

Then, I compared the bios of the third machine that worked.

The answer is make sure under Integrated Peripherals section SATA mode is on IDE mode  not AHCI mode. Then run the bios update .exe and it will work.

I hope this post saves someone hours of pain.

Wish I compared them sooner. 😂
