HDMI Port on GP63 Leopard 8RE Stopped Working
« on: 23-June-19, 08:34:15 »

I am stuck on how to fix this.

This week, my Windows 10 did an auto update and then all of a sudden my HDMI port stopped working.

I have had numerous technical help sessions with Microsoft and they have tried everything from re-installing drivers to updating drivers to a fresh new windows instance and nothing seems to be working. They seem to have the conclusion that it is a hardware issue but I am not entirely confident in that as the laptop is ~3 months old.

When I plug in my HDMI cable that is connected to my monitor, it simply never registered that there is something plugged in. I have tried different cables and different monitors and they all have the same issue.

I am using  Intel UHD Graphics 630 & NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060.

I am not overly knowledgeable with these types of issues so I would appreciate any help that I can get!

So you updated to 1903?
IMO its not hardware, its software, it was working prior to the update.
You might have to do a clean install.

Correct -  I am currently using 1903.  Not entirely sure what I was running before the update.

I did try a clean install, unfortunately that didn't solve the issue.

Try updating the bios and ec firmware.
You can do the bios directly from the Device manager.
EC you will have to download it.

To know if the HDMI port problem is hardware or software, download a Linux live image such as
Knoppix    http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html
Ubuntu    https://ubuntu.com/download/desktop

Burn the live image to a bootable USB drive or DVD, Shutdown Windows, boot from Knoppix or Ubuntu,
immediately you will see if the HDMI port is working or not.
If it is working you know the WIndows 1903 still has problems and need to go back to 1809.
If it isn't working, then return to MSI for service, but as you say

unlikely that it is the hardware.

If it's not a software issue, its hardware.
Start a repair ticket.

I am not entirely sure which version I was running it was working. I just know that on the 21st when I updated windows, it no longer worked.

I have tried clean installs using 1809 and 1803 and neither worked.

I will reach out to MSI tomorrow.

Thanks all for your help!

[ ERROR: SPECIFIED ATTACHMENT MISSING ]
Keep in touch and let us know what happens.
Unfortunately, I spoke with MSI Support and without any real troubleshooting, they told me to send it in for repair as it is still under warranty. That being said the potential time for that fix is ~30 days which is a but of a pain. Considering how I am confident that this is a software issue, I am hesitant to send it in.

Looking at the MSI website, the highest available driver for the Intel UHD Graphics 630 for my machine is 25.20.100.6471  but my current driver is 24.20.100.6292 and I can't seem to get it to update any higher. I have tried manually downloaded the file from MSI but it gives me an error each time saying it is non compatible.

Could this be the solution I am looking for?

I have tried that - done clean installs of 1803, 1809 and 1903.

Tried the HDMI port as soon as all were launched as well as after drivers were updated and none were successful

Try updating the Intel via the Device Manager.
Sorry  -  I should have said that. I have tried that as well as used Intel's Update application and both of those say that I am on the highest version available.

Download the update folder to your desktop, then do the update with the device manager "Browse My Computer For Driver Software" .... ?

Just gave that a shot and it just tells me that I already have the most up to date driver - https://ibb.co/HnGnSpj  (Screenshot)

When I use the Intel Driver Support Assistant, it tells me that I have the most up to date drivers but there is an * with the Intel UHD Graphics 630 saying that it cannot update this driver as I have a custom one and I need to visit MSI for the newer version.

But then when I go to MSI to get the newer version, when I go to install it it says the driver being installed is not validated for this computer.

Ok -  Good to know. Does that mean that the issue is likely with the Nvidia Driver? I have tried installing the newest version as well as rolling back to older versions but unfortunately, that has not fixed it. Any other recommendations?

Have you done the clean install using DDU?: https://www.wagnardsoft.com/

I will try that now.

I tried running ubuntu from a USB and unfortunately the HDMI port didn't seem to work there either so I am starting to think it might actually be hardware.

Will let you know how it goes after using DDU

Windows auto update may indeed be the culprit.  As you have tried various versions of Windows and drivers, no point repeating that.
Please check BIOS settings to see if the WIndows update turned fastboot on or did something else.
I'm guessing that you used UEFI and from experience I've seen HDMI ports work when the OS uses UEFI and not work under some UEFI settings.
There are a number of issues reported to be broken by the Windows 1903 update and hopefully fixes will be issued in coming months.

To confirm if it is a hardware issue or not, boot your computer from a non Windows OS, such as a live OS.  If the HDMI works, then it isn't a hardware problem, but a Windows problem.  No point guessing and going around in circles installing and removing drivers and rolling back and updating WIndows repeatedly.
