xpander aero card not recognized
« on: 10-September-19, 12:33:45 »

I purchased a meg x299 creation wanted to setup a radi0 on the card but the bios is not recognizing the card. I have two samsung nvme pro 1tb installed and the card plugged into the slot. Bios is set to uefi, sata mode is set to raid however when I enter the intel rapid storage in the bios it says no disks connected. I have tried other pcie slots for the card, I have move the mem modules to different locations on the card and still nothing. I know the mem works because I have installed them on the mobo and installed windows on a single module and as a raid0.

Am I missing something here, please help.

What CPU do you have, which slot the card is in, and what slots you place the drives in the card?
And please add other hardware in your forum signature as well >>Posting Guide<<

I have the i9-9940X. Single graphics card is in pci_e1, aero card is currently in pci_e2 (i have also tried pci_e3). The drives are currently in slots 3 & 4, I have also tried slots 1 & 2. To be clear when looking down at the card, the gold pins are facing me I am numbering from left to right 1-4.

It seems just right that the drives will be in slots 1 & 2 (1 being the close to the bracket).
Not sure if the card need to be seen or just the drives, check board explorer.

See page 97 in the manual about how to create a raid.

Drives in the m2_1 and ,2_2 (of the card) ? pci_e2 has only 8 lanes no way m2_3 and m2_4 will bee seen in that slot.

yes drives in the 1 and 2 slots of the card. pci_e2 8 lanes is perfect since there are only two nvme drives on the card anyway.
Is it not possible to make a raid and boot with this aero card?
I put the nvme drives back on the mobo since I cant get them to work on the aero card
Has anyone made a raid and booted from it using the aero card?

You cannot make the m.2 raid in legacy mode.

Advanced > Integrated Peripherals > SATA Mode [RAID/ Optane Mode]
Advanced > Windows OS Configuration > Windows 10 [Enabled]
Advanced > Integrated Peripherals > M2_X Pcie Storage Remapping [Enabled]

save & reboot, then enter bios again, Advanced > Intel(R) Rapid Storage Technology submenu to create the raid.

I am not in legacy mode. I am in uefi mode. I have done everything you said and when I go to the intel rst it says no disks connected to system. Should I be able to make a bootable raid on the aero xpander card?
Currently I can make a raid and install the os using onboard m2_1 and ms_2 with nvme drives but no luck using aero card. Its like the bios doesnt see the memory on the card

I think it should be bootable, best ask MSI, perhaps it;s a faulty card?

I have the x-299 Meg Cration with a Aero Expander (with one GPU and the Expander in PCI-E Slot 3).

you are not able to see the Aero in the Bios with other SSD as 1 or 4 Intel SSD, because the stupid Intel VROC limitations.

Windows can find and Handle the Aero with other SSDs as Intel... for normal use.
(I use a Samsung 970 pro 1TB in the 3. Mainboard M.2 slot and two M.2 SSDs in the Aero Expander / ( one for Games and one for Data) = no Bios Raid possible, with 2x Corsair MP500 980 GB ssds.
only windows works... without the bios or Intel Raid driver.

fun fact:
the VROC trial version without a key can find and work with the corsairs... for 90 days.

if you need Bios Intel VROC Raid... than you must buy bad or super expensive Intel SSD's with the x299 platform.

Intel RST Enterprise software can find and use the ssd's under windows in the trial 90 days period without a key.
I searched  the Internet and saw a person who used a key to unlock the trial period.... but after this he was not able to create a raid because the SSD was not a Intel SSD.

stupid Intel with the x299 VROC limitation.

on a MSI x399 creation -AMD- there is no limitation for the Aero Expander.

Beside this : you should use the main M.2 SSD with your OS in the 3. M.2  slot (M2_3) for "direct" PCI-E CPU connection...  the 1. and 2. M.2 Slots are connected to the x299 PCH (Block Diagram on page 23 in the Manual and in * small text)

Right now I am using samsung 970Pro 1TB each plugged into m2_1 and m2_2 as a raid0 created in the bios and use this as a boot volume for windows 10. I just purchased a single Intel 660P 2TB NVMe ssd and installed that into m2_3 however windows doesnt even recognize the drive is installed. Nothing shows in disk management, however the Bios does recognize this drive. Windows even installed the storage controller driver "Intel CPU attached nvme controller" after initial boot but still windows doesnt show any available drive.

I did finally figure out that the only way to use the aero card in a raid config is by purchasing the vroc and intel memory. Just like everyone else has said this is a horrible limitation and also not made clear anywhere in terms of documentation. msi failed to make this clear.

There was also a performance decrease in raid0 boot vs single drive. The single drive had 5-20% faster read and writes using crystal disk benchmarks so now I am thinking should I just install my os on a single using m2_3 slot?

I like this idea but where are you seeing in the block diagram pg.23 m2_3 is direct pci-e cpu connection. The block diagram shows qty.1 m.2 to the cpu and qty.2 m.2 to the pch. There is no * on page 23 or specification which m.2's go where. Can you clarify?

I used the Intel VROC RST-Enterprise Driver (Trial/without a key) from the MSI MEG x299 creation Driver page.
with this software you can see and create Raid (under Windows 10),  but only in the 90 day trial with other M.2 ssd's.

I gave up.
I use only one fast SSD in M.2_3 for the Windows 10 pro OS and the others in the Aero Expander over x16 PCI-E slot 3 (as single drives.. for different things data+ games)
speed is great ( for your samsung 970 pro M.2  you should install the Samsung NVME Driver (3.2) under Windows 10
+ you should use the MSI Dragon Center for activating the USB+Storage Boost option. (I hate the Dragon Center, I use it only for new Drivers/software and for the Boost function)

greetings from Germany..

The 1x M.2  shown top left on the PCI-E Switch is the M2_3 slot.
MSI should make this more clear.

you find this on page 16 / specifications / Storage /
with a tiny * mark in the text it says the M2_3 shares PCI-E Bandwidth /// means the "Lane switch for PCI-E 5 slot" = Bandwidth sharing only if other cards are in the last x16 PCI-E_5 slot (picture left).
The 2x M.2  = M2_1 and M2_2 slots are primary for the SATA M.2 use... and this goes over the chipset with only 1x 4 Lanes

MSI documentation is not good in many things..

Page 34 = ""PCIe and ----M2_3 slot--- bandwidth table / for CPUs with 44 /28 /16 Lanes
so M2_3 is on the PCI-E CPU switch with x4 lane speed.

not sure...

My Samsung 970 pro M.2 nvme in slot M.2_3 was shown in the MSI Uefi Bios as a selectable boot drive and windows had no problems with it.
I have no Intel ssd for testing.

I had a look on the Intel page for your Intel 660p and found this:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/28717/Client-NVMe-Treiber-f-r-Microsoft-Windows-f-r-Intel-SSDs

can be you need the Intel

or

??
read and try it.

Damn dude you solved it! Even msi support couldnt figure it out telling me I got bad memory or bad mobo and windows should just auto install and there is no manual driver to load. I kept telling them they where wrong. Windows loaded a default driver which didnt work. I used the intel downlaod center that told me all my drivers are current with no updates. I used the Intel ssd toolbox and that showed the latest firmware with no updates. It was the link you provided above that did the trick. Client NVMe Microsoft Windows Drivers for Intel SSDs but when I went to install it said I had the most recent version and I was going to install an older version which I did and the new driver appears in device manager > storage controllers as Intel SSD 660p Series and now the drive shows under disk manager. Dankeshoen!

I will probably return this intel drive and install windows on a single samsung 970 pro plugged into the m.2_3 since its the only m.2 with direct lanes to the cpu and then use m.2_1 and m.2_2 as a raid 0
