Cannot boot to CD-ROM
« on: 09-December-03, 11:59:50 »

I have my hard drives on IDE 1, and my CD-RW on IDE 2 as a master. All drives are hooked up properly. When I boot up using the MSI K8T Neo motherboard, memory checks okay, but then I get a horizontal menu:

"DEL - Setup    F11 - Boot menu    TAB - Logo    F10 - Flash recovery"

ISSUE 1:

The menu mentioned above is VERY unpredictable. Sometimes it will boot right past it, but sometimes, the menu will just SIT there like an idiot and wait for me to respond. And when I DO respond with a keystroke, it beeps at me and sits there for 20 SECONDS before doing anything. What gives!?

And sometimes, when it detects both hard drives, it will say in the next screen that "primary slave drive error"! I thought it was just detected? And this is RANDOM.

ISSUE 2:

I've barely set up my new computer. I would like to boot from my Windows XP so I can reformat from it, and install clean. When I choose to boot to the CD-ROM drive, I get the message, "Press any key to boot from this CD..." as the periods tick.

I push a key, and it doesn't respond. It continues booting into the hard drive. (Same thing happens at the "Windows Emergency Screen", when it gives the choice of which existence of Windows to boot into.)

The fact that I have to look at that stupid menu and the fact that I can't boot to the CD-ROM drive are absolutely troublesome. I don't know what to do...

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

WD harddisk?

If so, the standalone setting IS NOT MASTER!!!
It's jumperless unlike other drive's.

RE: Cannot boot to CD-ROM (*FIXED*)

Yesterday, I fixed this problem. It turns out that it didn't like the USB keyboard hooked up during bootup - that's why it wouldn't respond to it.

Picked up a few PS/2 keyboards the other day, had that plugged in during bootup. I booted right to CD, installed Windows XP, and the fireworks went off! :-)

This is something I'll document in the future. LOL
