Onboard LAN drivers
« on: 10-August-04, 12:46:50 »

Hi

I have a query with reference to the 'On-Board LAN' and which drivers I should be using for it.

My board is the MSI-6758 Ver 1.0 and the LAN chip on the board is shown as the INTEL 82547EI.

In Device Manager under Network Adapters, it shows:

Intel(R) PRO/1000 CT Network Connection and the present driver version is:

v7.4.19.0 and the driver date is 12/03/2004

The driver name that I've been using up until now is:

Pro1000_WinServer2003_XP (Intel Gigabit Ethernet Driver version 7.4.19.0 dated 1st June 2004.

On the MSI website they have drivers for:

Intel Gigabit Ethernet Drivers (Motherboard with onboard Intel Gigabit Ethernet Controller). with new support for Intel 82547GI Gigabit LAN.

But there is also:

Intel 82562 PRO 10/100 & 82540 PRO GB LAN Drivers

The board manual mentions  the Intel 8247EI (CSA Interface) and Intel 82562EZ (Dual layout).

Based on the fact that Device Manager shows an Intel PRO/1000 CT device and my LAN chip is 82547, should I be using the Intel 82562 PRO 10/100 & 82540 PRO GB LAN Drivers, or is my present driver the correct one?

It does also state in the manual that 1000Mb/s is for the Intel 82547EI only, so that would maybe tie in with the Device Manager entry?

Regards

Well, I can only say that if the current driver works at the 10/100/1000Mbps rate for your mobo, it's the correct driver and you should not be meddling with it since it's working fine as once you try to change or do something funny to it, it may end up being you causing the "errors" instead ;-)).

Thumb of rule: Never meddle with a smooth, stable running system .

Hi NovJoe

Thanks for your comments which I totally agree with but I am about to format my computer to install XP with integrated SP2 and given the details both in my signature and also in my post, I just like to know if I am actually using the correct drivers for the onboard NIC INTEL 82547EI which is shown in Device Manager as:

Intel(R) PRO/1000 CT Network Connection and the present driver version is:

v7.4.19.0 and the driver date is 12/03/2004

There must be thousands of users in this forum who are using the same board and welcome your comments but would also welcome input from users of the board.

Regards

No problem ;-)).

One of the ways to find out is to look on your mobo for the chip and check against the model number on the chip and try searching in either Intel's website or google for the chip model and find out the specs :-)).

I just reformatted XP with SP2 myself.
I wanted the latest Proset utility to manage the Gigabit card so I went to the Intel site.
I downloaded the file On This Page which installed the latest Proset utility(version 9.0) and drivers for the card which work fine.(Device manager says they are version 8.0.57.0 dated 6/22/2004)
