Need more voltage for RAM on Neo4 Plat/SLI
« on: 09-May-05, 17:10:26 »

I bought this OCZ PC4000 VX ram to run on my MSI Neo4 but little did I know that the board will not put out more than 2.85 volts for the ram. This ram is supposed to run at 3.3 volts stock and can be set up to 3.5 before voiding the warrenty. I updated my bios to 5.0 beta 6 which allows me to increase the voltage up to 3.1 but it's still not enough. This ram performs better with more voltage. I do not want to replace either the board or the ram but I will probably replace the board if I can't find a solution simply because it would be cheaper than the ram. Will the ram voltage be able to go higher in future bios releases? Is there some mod I can do to increase it?

  • You may be able to use an ocz ddr boosterfor you'r board I'm not not sure though. Ask the ocz guys here they can tell you for sure.

The MSI Neo4 boards are not compatible with OCZ DDR Booster.

  • Hi there zfrogz

Why do you need the 3.3V??
Do you intend to get the ram into PC4000??
That would get the 'FSB' into 250Mhz does the cpu get to that without any errors??

    Be well....

  • It's simply not possible with a bios upgrade as MSI takes the voltage to vdimm from the psu's 3.3v line and regulates it from this .
If they had used the +5v it would be possible (ref. DFI which have a jumper to select the source ).
The reason for not getting it high enough is a result of the used regulator type and it's natural loss which drops the voltage also some steps.

There is next to none A64 motherboard that provide that high vdimm , and it would be wise to do some reaserch on both mobo vdimm support and
ram required vdimm before buying regarding this issue .

As i see it you have three options :   :undecided:
Switch to a NF4 DFI board or a board compatible with OCZ ram booster
Replace memory with others that works within the MSI neo vdimm range .
Do a vdimm mod at the board (http://www.rhcf.com/sisubb/ultimatebb.php/topic/21/164.html) , on own risk and loose any warranty of course .

  • As I see this question being asked a lot with the new high voltage modules, I'm making this a sticky and locking it...

Even looking at Mushkin's new Red Line, only the DFI boards qualify.

as taken from the details from Mushkin's site

    Quote
Recommended Platforms--- Mushkin tests all Redline memory modules on Athlon64 platforms. Furthermore, when running two modules, only Socket 939 platforms are validated to run at rated specifications/timings. We currently recommend and validate the Redline memory series on the DFI LanParty UT NForce4 Ultra-D, DFI LanParty UT NForce4 SLI-DR, and DFI LanParty NForce4 SLI-DR boards as they provide the best combination of voltage options and compatibility for the Redline Series. Other motherboards may work, but may require modification for adequate voltages, and may not produce optimal results. Single Channel Athlon64 systems may have a hard time running 2x512mb dimms at rated speeds due to memory load on the single channel memory controller. Pentium4 and AthlonXP systems generally will not obtain rated specifications secondary to motherboard/memory controller limitations. These modules are compatible with most motherboards for Pentium4/AthlonXP CPUs, however end users are advised that lower frequencies achieved.
