What is the point of Single SATA RAID 0 ?
« on: 16-September-05, 04:13:10 »

Dear All,

We all know that RAID 0 benifits from at least 2 disk providing throughput at the same time. However with NVRAID, Single Disk is allow in RAID 0.

So my question is, will I see the true RAID 0 in terms of performance if I only have a single SATA disk in RAID 0(Stripped mode) ?

Recently I had a corruption of Array in my 2 x 200GB WD RAID 0 configuration, result in a loss of nearly 300 GB of data. If single SATA give the same performance, I would like to set it up that way and have my other 200GB as a standalone data drive.

Thank you for the inputs.

  • Single Disk RAID 0 is by definition not possible !  Just because you can put 1 disk into the RAID config does not mean that it will work.

If you want data protection then use RAID 1 with 2 disks (2x200Gb) will give you 200Gb data mirrored on both disks.

    Thanks for the reply.

But doesn't this seems a bit silly ? I mean if it does not work, why allow this type of configuration in the first place  :undecided:

Sometimes it's the only way for you to setup a SATA HDD as a boot drive.  :undecided:
