System wont boot after restart, hangs..
« on: 30-November-05, 17:22:54 »

Hello.

Recently i have got a strange problem.
When i restart or power on my computer without using the "main power switch on psu" my system hangs either just before cpu post or memory post.
If i turn it off  and on again using the switch on the psu it boots just fine..
I have searched alot around the internet and tried many things. Tried disconnenting devices, resetting cmos, disconnect everything from mobo and resetting cmos, tried new bios, tested my ram sticks in memtest and so on..
The funny thing is that this problem suddenly occured. My system worked fine until 2 weeks ago.
Also it have happened that it freezes in windows, screen freezes and computer stops responding. But usually in have run for 2-4 days before that happens.
It would be very much appreciated if someone could help me out with this  :-))

My specs:

Msi k8n neo2 platinum 54g
Amd 64 3200 winchester
4 * 512mb 3200 ocz ram
Mist 430w psu
4* 200gb maxtor s-ata
card reader
dvd-rw
ati x800xl
+ alot of silent fans

tried changing the CMOS battery to new one?

If so, actually, it sounds as though you're system is runnuing very hot. What are the temps on CPU, Video, HDD under idle and load?

Thanks for fast reply!
I`ve thought of the battery, but bios remember its settings perfectly.. Should I try changing it anyways?
My temps are:

Cpu : 34 idle max 46 load
Vga : 40 idle max 50 load
Hdd`s : max 40
System: max 40
Also a 60mm fan blowing on the mem and 3 * 120mm case fans.
Don`t think heat is the problem..

Hello !!

Try this:
Pull out power cable from PSU and switch your PSU off.
Now push your Case Power ON switch and do not release it !! Hold it for at least 30 seconds.
Plug Power cable back on PSU and switch it on.

Please tell us how much current your PSU provides on each voltage rail. You can try also to disconnect some unnecessary devices like DVD-ROM or second HDD and so on, just for the case your PSU is the problem.

Good Luck.

Vcc:  4,91v
Vin2:  0,00v

you've provided voltages, not current. Please let us know how many amps each railing is getting

Ok. From Psu users manual:

+5V max load 36A
+12V max load 20A
+3,3V 28A
-5V max load 0,5A
-12V max load 1,0A
+5VSB max load 2,0A

you may have there a problem, mate. 20A on +12 rail is too little for your rig. You need at LEAST 24 and possibly over 30. Try changing PSU and see if porblem resolves, if not.... :wall:  :confused2:

Ok, now i am confused.
I have discussed this problem with other people in a norwegian forum. They guess that it is the motherboard which is causing this problem.
I also think that. Because system have worked perfect until recently. As  i said earlier i have tried to disable some hardware to see how that worked and it was the same.
Now when system i booted it is 100% stable. The freezes that occured in windows was software related.
Also discovered that if i load windows in fail safe mode problem is gone! Have not been able to figure that one out.
Almost getting depressed here.
Comments? Tips?

  • Sounds like a piece of hardware, Nic, sata HD, cd left in cd-rom or some other piece that is causing you problems. Disable or remove one piece at a time (like disable Nic in BIO, disconnect one drive or all and so on) until you find the problem.

Hmm, now i have run HD Tach on my drives. One of them only gets 19,1 MB/s. The others get 130-140 Mb/s.
Maybe that disk that is dying  :nooo:

Actually two of my drives is getting 18-19 MB/s with HD Tach. Tried to run Sisoft Sandra on them but computer stopped responding then.
They are both connected to SATA 1 and 2 on Mobo. Is this a driver problem or something??
Disconnected them to see if the boot problem was gone, but it was still there  :wall:
I think this board is @!?#ed up.
