Good News! :3

Hasee, a big Chinese notebook manufacturer had an conference in China a few days ago and it's CEO Wu Haijun revealed that the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 990M (Codename: N16E-GXX) will be coming in Q4 (September - December 2015). Probably close to September so as to not put it too close to Pascal (June 2016-ish)

NVIDIA is not happy with him revealing it earlier than they intended...

It will be based upon the Maxwell GM204 architecture, like the current desktop GTX 980 and it will be just as powerful as the NVIDIA GTX 980M SLI. It will have an variable TDP of anywhere from 100 to 180+ Watts so notebook manufacturers can design their respective cooling systems accordingly for a target performance level.

Now for the bad news... The GTX 990M won't be available to purchase as an MXM solution. It will be soldered directly onto the motherboard of all of the new laptops due to the new chips high power consumption and it requiring custom cooling solutions. So, everyone out there who have bought either the MSI GT72 or GT80 gaming laptops will unfortunately not be able to upgrade from the 970m or 980m to this new GPU model once it's released.

I highly recommend anyone who owns laptops equipped with 970m/980m to just go ahead and sell their old laptop for an new model featuring the GTX 990M once they're available in the market as it'll save them lots of money in the long run anyway as MXM upgrades can be very expensive.

That's correct. Due to the GTX 990M having an entirely new architecture, it will be soldered to the motherboard and will require a new cooling solution designed for it. No MXM upgrades.

For now... You can't rule out newer iterations or newer chipsets that will see the day of light on MXM.

The GTX 980M is just a slightly nerfed GTX 970. But this 990M is gonna be a 980M in SLI. We all know the 970 in SLI is like a 980 Ti (for games that support sli). Then 980m in sli is like a 980 ti.

So this 990M is just a 980 Ti for laptops. Cool. But dang, i was hoping i could upgrade to the 990M, but oh well. I'm not willing to sell my gt72 anytime soon so guess i'm stuck with it till the 1200 series, assuming nvidia stays with their current naming scheme.

I wonder though, is it possible to have 990M in sli on a GT80 titan as well? that'd be better than a titan X i bet. 980 ti in sli in a laptop basically.

there are times when two 980Ms can outperform a Titan X, take a look:

In Most of the video 2x980M in SLI > Titan X > 980
