MSI 1080 Gaming X blew up before 2 days old
« on: 19-November-16, 14:28:35 »

So I recieved my brand new MSI 1080 Gaming X card on Wednesday evening. Installed it, did a couple of VR demos, and went to bed as up early for work on Thursday. Thursday night I played about an hour of Onward VR and again went to bed. Friday while I was at work, My mrs rang me up to tell me my new graphics card jus made a pop/bang noise, with sparks flying out of it, and smoke.

When I arrived home, the card stunk at the far end opposite to the ports, luckily I still got my old 780 to put in to get my computer on and working. What really annoys me is that I worked hard to get my PC to the level it is now for VR Gaming and the Vive itself, it's not cheap as you know. My retailer (EBUYER UK) refuse to send any replacements out until they have got the card back, tested it etc etc which takes 5 working days!!!! Longer than I have even had the card in my possession. I understand their procedures, but naturally i am going to be angry with MSI and Ebuyer, since it happened on a Friday and was looking forward to time off work and proper PC gaming, now im spending the weekend sorting out returning it, and finding another brand to go for.

MY PSU is a Thermaltake 1275w XT GOLD, in comparison this psu in the past has been running 2 x 280x in crossfire, followed by 2 x 780 in SLI. Being a PC enthusiast I know 110% as you guys will also know, that this PSU is well above the requirements to run this card.

Also, the time the card blew it was under ZERO load, it was on the desktop with only chrome and microsoft word loaded which is what the mrs was using at the time.

The card has not been overclocked at all apart from the factory OC, have not even had time anyway before it blew to do anything like that, plus the fact I don't plan on overclocking such a card for a good while yet.
I have had terrible service from Ebuyer regarding the support, MSI have also not responded to any of my mails. It's truly a shame because I have been using Ebuyer since the dawn of time and been using MSI cards also since I can remember, so I have never had to deal with aftersales support from either company.

Obviously googling only returns the numerous amounts of EVGA cards that are blowing up, and seems to be only me who has had a MSI card blow up, however what makes it more confusing is that mine happened under 0 graphical load. Infact when playing any games the temps never went above 62c, which is why I buy MSI the temps are some of the best on the market. So I believe this is a VRM issue with MSI design similar to EVGA, maybe a manufacturing error on my card since others with MSI have not had any similar issues.

Anyway, that's my rant, it's Saturday afternoon and I am sat with a blown up MSI 1080 card, so as my fellow geeks can relate, it's really upsetting and a huge LETDOWN :(

Hi

It just happens...
And well, obviously your retailer must test it before proceeding with further process.
In any case, ask them to record the results, and make sure to write down S/N of the card so you dont receive the same one IF they say it is indeed faulty.
